Buddhism, Hinduism, Christianity and Judaism all speak against taking something which does not belong to us.
Originally this was, of course, an effort to maintain an orderly society but there is a deeper and more profound spiritual message. Taking from another person declares to the universe that we are separate from one another and, therefore, separate from the flow of Universal good.
