JumpStart - The Wang Lung Myth
Thursday Jul 16, 2020
Thursday Jul 16, 2020
One of my favorite books is “The Good Earth“ by Pearl Buck.
The protagonist is a young Chinese man named Wang Lung Who goes from starvation and rags to wealth and abundance.
In Chinese society during the time of Wang Lung, male children are favored highly whereas girl children are often referred to as “slaves” -- someone who must be raised and endured before selling her to become a wife of the highest bidder.
To their great joy, Lung and his wife give birth to a son but rather than showing him proudly to the world the diminish his presence out of fear that in some form of great reckoning the universe will take him from them.
We all have similar fears: “don’t aim too high so it won’t hurt so bad when you inevitably fall” and this limits our happiness and success.
If you’re ready to aim high and achieve even higher, this JumpStart is for you.

JumpStart - Calm vs Control
Friday Jul 10, 2020
Friday Jul 10, 2020
I love Lewis Black’s character “Anger” in the Pixar movie “Inside Out.”
Anger, depicted as sort of a fuzzy red rectangle wearing a rumpled shirt and a skinny black tie, is always on the verge of losing it and when he gets upset his rage is a literal volcano erupting as flames from the top of his head.
Many of us have learned to control our overt rage because we know it’s not healthy in a society where others can react equally (and often more) angrily toward us.
However, beyond control of our anger there is a far more beautiful aspiration -- calm, feeling chill even in the midst of stressful and upsetting situations.
If you’re ready to experience less upset in upsetting situations, this is your JumpStart.

JumpStart - Sacred Clowns
Thursday Jul 09, 2020
Thursday Jul 09, 2020
Long-time followers will know that this isn’t my first time on this subject.
However, given all that’s transpiring around us, it’s a good idea to remind ourselves of this enduring Native American trickster whose job is to prod, tease, and irritate us so that we grow to become less reactive and more understanding.
Just remember two things:
First, other people are your sacred clowns -- people who bug you so that (ideally) you master your reactions.
And second, YOU are a Sacred Clown for other people as well. It’s just human nature.
Today, let’s remind ourselves of the role the sacred clown plays in our life and how we can derive benefit (rather than irritation) from their presence.

JumpStart - Schadenfreude
Wednesday Jul 08, 2020
Wednesday Jul 08, 2020
“Oh, how good it feels to feel bad... for someone else, that is.”
Many think schadenfreude is proof that people are inherently evil, which makes sense -- I mean, why would human beings derive pleasure from another person's misfortune?
But, Schadenfreude is more related to our perceived place in society than an evil pleasure from seeing others suffer.
Schadenfreude is experienced most keenly when someone we perceive to have a better life than us falls from grace and, as such, schadenfreude is more a comment on our own perceived worth within society.
Find out how you can be aware of our natural propensity to savor another’s suffering and how we can replace that feeling with a strong sense of self-worth and appreciation.

JumpStart - Salutation to the Dawn
Tuesday Jul 07, 2020
Tuesday Jul 07, 2020
Nearly 5000 years ago, a Hindu poet named Kalidasa wrote a poem that has touched lives ever since.
It’s called “Salutation to the Dawn”....
Look to this day!
For it is life, the very life of life.
In its brief course
Lie all the verities and realities of your existence:
— — The bliss of growth;
— — The glory of action;
— — The splendor of achievement;
For yesterday is but a dream,
And tomorrow is only a vision;
But today, well lived, makes every yesterday a dream of happiness,
And every tomorrow a vision of hope.
Look well, therefore, to this day!
Today, let’s look well on what lies before us rather than regret what’s behind us or fear what’s before us because today holds everything.

JumpStart - New Beginnings
Monday Jul 06, 2020
Monday Jul 06, 2020
When I was a kid, my mom gave me a little unfinished statue of a boy and on the base was carved, “Be patient, God isn’t finished with me yet.”
To this day, I think of that statue and the unfinished nature of our lives.
Life is always evolving and because life is evolving we can choose new beginnings at any time.
Where do you wish you could start over?
Now, HOW can you begin to start over? (good question)
You have the capacity to begin again and enjoy a new outcome.

JumpStart - The Price of Freedom
Friday Jul 03, 2020
Friday Jul 03, 2020
Bishop Desmond Tutu was said, “Eternal vigilance is the price of freedom” and truer words were never spoken.
Once we have something so precious as freedom, it takes each of us keeping watch over her such that she is healthy and shelters us all.
Now more than ever, we vote with our actions so choose to be a modern day patriot -- someone who guards what is good for EVERYONE in our society.
Today, let’s give thanks for freedom and own our part in keeping ourselves and others free.
