Most of us are the two characters in Samuel Beckett’s play Waiting for Godo, except we’re not waiting for Godo, we’re waiting on our problems to be fixed — by someone else!
Here’s something important to remember: successful people have an (FSO) Degree — they Figure Stuff Out for themselves. They take action to solve their problems and starting today you can too!

We all have things in our lives that we put off.
“Someday I’m going to…” we say and then, well — nothing.
Why is it so hard to get ourselves to do (or stop doing) things we know are important?
How can you motivate yourself to do those things you know you should?
We answer BOTH of those questions in this Jumpstart.

JumpStart - Spotlight

The other day, I heard about a research project where dozens of people were divided into 2 groups.
One-by-one, and out of sight of everyone else, each person was instructed to run up a hill and touch a specific tree at the top.
Each person’s speed, intensity, physical exertion and more was measured as they dashed up the hill to tag the tree.
The interesting thing is that for half or the participants the tree was hit with a spotlight thereby drawing the runner’s focus to the tree as he or she dashed up the hill.
When the tree was spotlighted the runners ran faster and yet exerted less energy.
Not only that, the people running towards the spotlit tree felt that the hill was less steep and the tree was closer than it was.
Bottom line: if you’ve got something to focus on you’ll get there faster, with less energy and less stress.
‘Sound good?
Great, let’s get started.

JumpStart - The Reverse of an idea
Tuesday Aug 25, 2020
Tuesday Aug 25, 2020
One of the interesting things I’ve learned while studying metaphysics is that the human mind always says “yes”.
In fact, the human brain really doesn’t understand the words “no,” “not,” “nor,” “neither,” or “none.”
Therefore, when you’re programming your mind with affirmations it’s important to say “I eat healthy food that supports my healthy fit” rather than “I never eat junk food because it makes me fat.”
The mind cannot focus on the reverse of an idea, that’s why it’s more impactful to tell someone “Remember to pick up bread on the way home” rather than “Don’t forget to pick up bread on the way home.”
The first comment is positive and the second is negative so the mind avoids it.
When speaking to yourself and others, it’s good to put things into a positive context the mind is more likely to accept.
Today, let’s learn how.

The other day I was talking to someone who is looking for a job and he had not written out anything he was looking for in the job.
Me? I make a detailed list of EVERYTHING I’m looking for before I go looking for something.
As a result of my friend's uncertainty, everything that came his way seemed like a good opportunity.
I explained that we need to have a big “no go“ zone – – in other words, be picky.
W. Somerset Maugham said “If you refuse to accept anything but the best in life you will often get it.”
Learn to get what you want by clearly defining what you don’t want.

Do you want to have a better life?
Of course, don’t we all?
The other day I was pondering (SISDBD) “Stuff I Should Do But Don’t” and realized that even though I’m a disciplined and diligent person I have a fairly long list of things that would improve my life that I either don’t do or do them insufficiently to achieve the results I desire.
I’ll bet you have a similar list of things that you just can’t seem to get yourself to do, right?
Today, I’m going to teach you some simple tricks that will get you to do them.
Seriously.
Moreover, you’ll discover that once you start doing things to improve your life it becomes a broad brush that paints your life with joy.

JumpStart - MacGuffins
Tuesday Aug 18, 2020
Tuesday Aug 18, 2020
The thing I miss most during the pandemic is movie theaters.
I LOVE movies and about 6 years ago my (then) local AMC in KC installed a bar called MacGuffins.
It was great to finally be able to have a glass of wine or a cocktail while watching the latest flick and on the wall was a sign explaining the bar’s unique name.
MacGuffin isn’t someone’s surname -- it’s a made up term referring to is “an object or device in a movie or a book that serves merely as a trigger for the plot.”
Hitchcock often used the term “MacGuffin” on set to explain scene transitions to the cast and crew of his movies.
Your life’s plot is triggered forward (or backward) by MacGuffins both large and small every day that spin you off into unbelievable stories.
Today, let’s learn to spot the MacGuffins and better maintain control of our own life script.

We’re now less than 3 months from the 2020 election and I want to revisit a Facebook Live video I recorded at approximately 8 AM on November 9, 2016.
The world woke up in shock to find out that Donald Trump was going to become the 45th president of the U.S. and the outcry on social media was bigger than anything I’d seen previously.
That morning, I sat on my couch and gave what I could to foment hope in the world and to quiet fears.
Today, I’d like to revisit that post and how it’s all tied up in my favorite joke, the punchline of which I’ll go ahead and tell you now...
“God wins.”

JumpStart - Jerry Z.
Friday Aug 14, 2020
Friday Aug 14, 2020
In my bestselling book Happy This Year, I tell the story of my neighbor Jerry who was one of the happiest people I’ve ever met.
Back then I was in ministerial school and we were barely scraping by, so I was trying my best to maintain our 100+ year-old home.
One day I was trying to re-roof our porch (something I’d never done before) when Jerry and his son slowly edged me off the roof and onto the ground while they expertly completed the job.
Typical Jerry -- spending every waking moment doing for others.
Today, let’s talk about how focusing on other people’s needs rather than our own makes us happier, less stressed, and decreases both worry and anxiety in our lives.
Today, let me nudge you up on the roof so you can help someone else get off.
