It was Geoffrey Chaucer who popularized the saying, “Familiarity breeds contempt” and with so many of us trapped at home with family that quote rings more true now than ever.
But what is contempt?
The dictionary defines “contempt” as “the feeling that a person or a thing is beneath consideration, worthless, or deserving scorn.”
A recent article in Psychology Today says that it’s not the amount of time that we spend with someone that causes contempt, it’s a “me first” attitude.
Putting ourselves and our needs ahead of those we’re with can cause us to look at our loved ones with contempt making them uncomfortable and us unhappy.
The secret to staying happy in close quarters for an extended period of time is to be wary of focussing on how the quarantine is affecting us and instead seek to understand and support others who are being similarly affected.
Today, let’s talk about how we can minimize contempt and maximize respect and appreciation because that will makes us happier and this time of isolation more bearable.
