Masters of Life 19  - Khalil Gibran

January 13, 2019

Nothing in my life prepared me for the role of being a father.

Certainly not my own childhood, which was fraught with abuse and neglect.

Even though I was ill-prepared, I knew fatherhood was the one job I really wanted to do well!

I read lots of books and I talk to a lot of other parents.

However, sometimes I fell short in being Super Dad and it was in those moments that these words from Khalil Gibran’s The Prophet brought me peace:

“Your children are not your children.
They are the sons and daughters of Life's longing for itself.
They come through you but not from you,
And though they are with you yet they belong not to you.”

Sometimes, realizing that we are simply there to be caregivers to the souls entrusted to us lets us relax and enjoy the parenting process - while simultaneously doing an even better job!
