“There is a time in every man’s education when he arrives at the conviction that envy is ignorance; that imitation is suicide; that he must take himself for better for worse as his portion.“ – Emerson If you could be anyone other than yourself who would it be? Take a second to seriously ask yourself this question, “ If I could be anyone other than myself who would I be?“ Be honest. The other day I explored this question in depth myself and realized some important things about comparing ourselves to others and, more importantly how to close the gap between who we are and the people we dream of becoming. If you’re ready to explore your self-worth and come out a winner, then today’s JumpStart is for you! Be sure to post your questions and comments, I always reply to them personally.

“For always the inmost becomes the outmost - and our first thought is rendered back to us by the trumpets of the last judgment.“ – Emerson I love this quote from “Self-Reliance“ by Ralph Waldo Emerson because it succinctly explains the field of metaphysics. Your outer world is a reflection of your inner world and when you begin to master your inner world your outer world takes the shape and substance you desire. What is it that you would like to do, have, or become? Can you put yourself into that situation now? Let’s talk about ways to do exactly that so that the fulfillment of your dreams begins to flow like water. Be sure to post your questions and comments, I always reply to them personally.

JumpStart- Self Reliance – Part 1

Four months ago, I picked up “The Complete Works of Ralph Waldo Emerson” and read “Self Reliance.” I’m sure I read it in school but the impact this essay had on me this time was HUGE; so much so that I’m going to do an entire series on this life-changing work of literature. Over the next several weeks I’m going to be sharing with you my favorite quotes from “Self Reliance” and expanding on each. We start off with the essay’s first words, Man is his own star; and the soul that can Render an honest and perfect man, Commands all light, all influence, all fate; Nothing to him fault early or too late. Our acts our angels are or good or ill, our fatal shadows that walked by us still. Sure, the writing is a bit archaic but the idea is profound and today we’re going to explore how to apply it to your life. Do you own Apple AirPods? If not, you don’t know what you’re missing (and no, I am not getting paid for saying this). It took me a couple of years to try AirPods; but once I did, I fell in love! I purchased AirPods for everyone in my family — and these bad boys are expensive! About a year ago, I noticed the sound fading in the left AirPod. The right one sounded fine – – but the left AirPod sounded weird and muffled. Overtime, the sound in the left AirPod diminished to the point where it was barely audible. One day, what I thought was a really bad thing happened and yet it FIXED my left AirPod! This lead me to explore what I now call “Positive Uncertainty.” Today, let’s explore your Positive Uncertainty. Be sure to post your questions and comments, I always reply to them personally.

I once heard the concept that everyone is one of two types of hero — either a conquering hero or a suffering hero.
The hero is always the focus of the story. Suffering heroes use their own misery to get people’s attention and make themselves the focus of whatever is happening.
Today, we talk about how to step out of pain and suffering and become a conquering hero.
I share a personal story of something that happened just the other day where I could’ve easily gone into suffering but, instead, consciously chose to be a conquering hero – – and you can too!

Don’t you just love watching blooper reels where actors or announcers flub their lines, scenery malfunctions, unexpected people walk into scenes, etc.?
They’re funny to us but many times not very funny to the people creating the gaffs.
I recently heard a social scientist say this about Facebook, “The problem with social media is that we are watching everyone else’s highlight reel while we are living our own blooper reel.“
Today, let’s talk about the pitfalls of comparing ourselves to others especially the ideal lives we presume others to be living as projected on Facebook, Instagram, etc.
Today, stop focusing on your blooper reel and let’s get real!

When I tell people I live in Key Largo Florida they often look at me with glazed eyes and mutter some variation of, “Well! It must be nice“ while rolling their eyes in mock (and sometimes real) exasperation.
Moving to the Florida Keys seems like an unattainable dream for most people – – it certainly did for me for a very long time.
In today’s JumpStart I share the true story of my good friend Rob who moved here with very little money and now lives in paradise in the lap of luxury.
The barriers to your dreams are only in your head and today we’re going to break through them together!

If you will indulge me in a bit of fan-boy geek-speak, I think Heath Ledger‘s portrayal of the Joker was phenomenal and only surpassed by Joaquin Phoenix‘s Joker.
In preparing to play the clown prince of crime, BOTH Phoenix and Ledger used the same method to create their haunting and memorable characterizations of this timeless villain.
The cool thing is, YOU can use this same method to become any character YOU want — IN REALITY.
If you’re ready to take your life to the next level, I’ll share with you the secret in today’s JumpStart.

If you’re anything like me, life is pretty good, but some days are fraught with irritations and setbacks.
Having counseled hundreds of people through challenges in both small and large, I finally realized that some people‘s way of handling problems is to simply get angry.
Yep, that’s their strategy and it only makes things worse.
What we need to do is develop strategies to overcome the challenges in our lives without losing our temper.
Being angry isn’t a strategy – – it’s a hinderance.
Today let’s open up to accepting things the way they are and developing plans to handle things that go wrong .
You are far more powerful and capable than you can imagine so let’s let more of the real you out!

I was recently speaking in Tulsa Oklahoma when I saw one of the funniest things ever.
A group of the event’s leaders invited me out for dinner at a nearby Mexican restaurant.
The place was busy and the staff was rushing to keep up.
After an extended wait, our waiter came to our table to take our orders.
The funny thing was that he would take one person’s order (there were eight of us) and and then the kitchen would ring a bell telling him food was up for another table and he would run off.
Then, he would come back and take another one of our orders when suddenly the bar would signal him to pick up drinks for another table and off he’d go.
You may not be as distracted as this waiter but you can certainly benefit from being more focused and today I’m going to give you some tips on how to do just that.
