JumpStart - Adapting

JumpStart - Adapting

October 28, 2021

The word “adapt” is defined, “To adjust or modify fittingly.”

That means that when stuff goes sideways you simply do what you can to:

  1. Not make it worse

  2. Pull the best out of it

In this JumpStart, I share with you how I recently had the opportunity to adapt and how you might learn to adapt to situations and make the most out of every day…

JumpStart - Opposite Day

JumpStart - Opposite Day

October 27, 2021

After talking about Winnie the Pooh in yesterday’s JumpStart, I thought about a Calvin and Hobbs strip where the two of them are arguing.

When Calvin finally gets his stuffed tiger friend to agree to something, Hobbs reneges saying, “Sorry, today’s opposite day.”

“Opposite Day” -- don’t you love it?

What if for one day you could be the opposite of any and all challenging behaviors you have?

What if you were free to make new choices, try new things, and be more of who you want to become?

All of those possibilities exist now, today!

Why?

Because today is Opposite Day…

JumpStart - Wisdom of Pogo

JumpStart - Wisdom of Pogo

October 26, 2021

Back when I was a kid, there was much less to keep us entertained so we valued the entertainment we got.

Like, the comics!!

Every day my little hands would dig through the stack of newspaper sections to find the comics and would lose myself in Blondie, Hagar the Horrible, BC, The Wizard of Id, and Pogo.

Walt Kelly who created Pogo had a profound sense of humor and in one of his strips Pogo famously says, “We have met the enemy and he is us.”

I’ve quoted this many times to myself because when we take responsibility for our lives -- as it is, then and only then can we begin to make new choices.

If you’re ready to positively transform the enemy you carry around with you into an ally, let’s get started now…

JumpStart - The Tao of Pooh

JumpStart - The Tao of Pooh

October 25, 2021

Who doesn’t love the wisdom of Winnie The Pooh, right?

“Cottleston, Cottleston, Cottleston Pie,

A fly can’t bird but a bird can fly.

Ask me a question and I will reply:

Cottleston, Cottleston, Cottleston Pie.”

In “The Tao of Pooh” the author Benjamin Hoff explains Taoism through the loveable characters from the Winnie the Pooh books by HH Milne.

So, who are you?  Pompous old Owl? Clever Rabbit? Uncertain Piglet?  Negative Eeyore? Over-confident Tigger?

These are all personas we adopt but our goal, as always, is to be more like Pooh.

Here’s how…

JumpStart - Before You Compose a Response

JumpStart - Before You Compose a Response

October 22, 2021

Have you noticed just how wrong some conventional wisdom can be?

For example, the idea of “don’t just sit there, do something!” has caused lots of people problems because often hyperactivity is counterproductive.

The way I like to think of it is,

“Before you compose a response, compose yourself.”

Whenever we’re upset, our first response is typically our worst response and the best thing we can do is to:

  1. Decide the outcome you wish to have
  2. Speak accordingly
  3. Be nice

The mark of maturity is the ability to respond rather than react and you have more control over your responses than you imagine.

Let’s unpack how to gain composure when we need it most…

JumpStart - Stressed Out in Chillsville

October 21, 2021

As you know, I’ve been gone for a couple of weeks and it’s good to be back with you again.

So, you’ve heard the analogy of the frog in the water, right?

If you turn up the heat underneath the water slowly, the frog will boil to death.

However, if you throw a frog into boiling water it will jump out.

I didn’t realize it but I was a frog in the water and I needed to get out.

Let me update you on what I’ve been up to and how you can take my sabbatical to heart to become a bit more relaxed in your daily life.

HINT: my cell phone usage dropped by 92%!

JumpStart - Enrage and Engage

JumpStart - Enrage and Engage

October 4, 2021

In a normal year, there is an average of 150 in-flight incidents involving unruly passengers on airplanes.

But in just the last 4 months, there have been…get this: 1,300 such incidents and they’re increasing daily to the point that American Airlines has issued panic buttons to many flight attendants.

What’s causing this rise in airline incivility?

Politics.

More specifically, how both political sides are seeking to enrage and engage their base.

Let’s unpack how the media seeks to enrage us to keep us engaged and how this engagement is leading to acts of protest and even violence.

JumpStart - Phrases to release

JumpStart - Phrases to release

October 1, 2021

Over the last month or so I’ve been watching the words that pop up in my mind as I’m approaching any new task from learning a new software program to playing pickleball.

And these phrases are so automatic that I don’t realize that

They are limiting my performance

  1. These words are diminishing my joy
  2. They are keeping me caught in a loop of struggle

Phrases like, “I’m scared to death that…”, “I can’t seem to get myself to…”, “This will never work…” doom us to failure before we even attempt.

Getting the commentary in your head right is critical to success and anything so we need to find our “weed” phrases, pull them out, and replace them with new seed thoughts.

Here’s how>>>
